Sounds of Spring

A bit off topic but… Just had a short thunderstorm pass through. Not a big deal to folk’s in warmer climates but huge deal here in the great white north. It means the last of the white stuff is being washed away.
Although we’re sheltered in right now, those few rolls of thunder mean better time’s ahead. Being outdoors, grilling, smoking, camp fire’s and gathering with family and freinds.
Stay strong people… We got this!

Here in southern MI, our lightening started about midnight, heavy rain and thunder for the next 2 hours and simply rain til dawn…raining off and on all day with beautiful sunshine peeking thru now and then til 3p or so…now gloomy and misty. Really pretty good day all told since we’re stuck in and are tired of TV so now we watch the weather !!

I hear ya Mr. Clyde Johnson . The little things we appreciate. -
Up here in northern WI, just south of superior, we woke up to over 8 inches of wet heavy snow. We were finally able to see patches of grass, and now this. Be glad you only got rain

calling for snow in Maine tonight

PapaSop Way to try to keep people looking at the good stuff coming instead of focussing on the negatives! What’s the saying “This too shall pass”? Or something like that!

Heard you guy’s got dumped on. That’s Wi. Good thing is it won’t last long. -
We still have two feet of snow here on the ground. I expect that this will be knocked down after this week of warmer temps. Perfect weather for boiling sap and making sausage.

YooperDog I still have big snow banks where I plowed, and in the woods the snow is still almost knee high. Funny thing is, superior is only 20 miles north of me and they have nothing on the ground. Has been great temps for sapping, just hard getting around in the woods. It is nice tho being stuck at home to have plenty of pork butts and venison in the freezer to make sausage

Kyle I lived in Superior a lifetime ago. Attended UWS, left there in 1983, we have been back a few times over the years. Snow banks around our place in the UP range 3-5 feet. I hear that Marquette is close to snow free except for the plow hill’s. I suspect that it is the big lake effect. I will be doing the same here, boiling, bottling, curing, grinding, stuffing, repeat.

Down here, in Southeast Texas, we get Spring before Spring begins. My favorite “Sound of Spring” is the chorus of morning birds chirping away.

Just missed a big line of TWR’s gland on that part, had trees blown over near me a few days ago. Tomato plants about 18-24 inch tall, don’t need any hail. Been plenty warm here in S.E. TX , so growing season is here. Don’t miss the snow I used to get in Colorado. Garden didn’t go it for another month. Happy Easter to all!

Down here in N. WI on ‘essential’ business. Peeps, geese and cranes in full vocal harmony. But after this last snow storm,12" of heavy wet stuff I expect that to be silenced until at least this weekend.

Andrew Do you do any hunting out there? If so what is the coolest/most dangerous thing you’ve gone after? Also, I have a South African Mastiff who is just over 1 year old…actually he is now 1.5 years old but he weighs a ludicrous 165 lb!

Hi Yes we have the big five here I am fairly central in the country but these animals have been marketed to foreigners due to the rand exchange rate we can no longer afford to hunt the big 5 (lion, leopard, Rhino, buffalo and elephant). We have the antelope like the Eland, Red hartebeest, Impala, Springbok, Kudu, Zebra,
I have shot some warthog with a compound bow and worked that meat but otherwise rely on beef and pork mainly. Yes I ahave a boerbull dog part of the mastiff family also a big boy.
Thanks for the note stay safe and keep well.
regards Andrew -
Andrew I used to work with a gentleman from South Africa before I retired. I gave him many of my Midwest fresh casing and smoked sausage all the time. he often talked about Boerewors sausages. He did not know the recipe. Would you care to share the recipe? So we can try a taste of South Africa in the USA.
