PALongrifle I would really like to try a Lake Erie walleye trip sometime. I grew up in MN where walleye is king, now live in NM and really enjoy fly fishing for trout.

Austin and I have been invited to go fro Walleye, Northern Pike and Muskies in Minnesota when we go up there for business with Travis Frank (podcast guest) http://trophyencounters.com/ I cannot freaking wait. It has been YEARS since I have caught anything other than a Large Mouth, Catfish or Crappie. Down here those are pretty much he options unless you want to travel. Acutally, one day I randomly caught a buffalo carp in my pond…just once but I guess that means I am there!

Jonathon You are going to have a great time, hope you both get to catch a Muskie, it will be a thrill of a life time. My new goal is to catch one on a fly rod, hopefully sometime. That carp is known as a fresh water bonefish, you should try one of those on a fly rod!

bocephus A few years ago my wife bought me a fly rod and on the occasional windless day (rare in kansas) I go out on my pond and try fly fishing. I’ve got bass and sunfish on it but don;t really get the chance to take it anywhere where I could catch anything really cool with it. A muskie on a fly-rod would be intense! Good luck with that!

I build fishing rods and always test them before handing them off to the customer. I was at the local lake and was test casting a new fly rod. I had a white cork bass popper tied on just to have something on the line. The popper ran into a foam line and I hooked up solid with a large ( for here) carp. Took a good long time to get it played to the point I could release it. There are a lot of people fly fishing for carp now I am sure that if you do a search for this you will get a lot of information. They are a hoot to catch.
