craigrice my opinion…. Out of the 471 samples they received false positives. But then again it says antibodies not a current positive test

I’m really more concerned with a case of CWD we had in Ohio last season from a harvested deer.
-
it is something to be aware of for all hunters in this community and else were

craigrice I think it was a WI or MI DNR study article. I read it a couple of days ago and part of it was not knowing how they contracted the virus. All I can say is that I am willing to eradicate those deer for science and store them in my freezer for follow-up processing, err… I mean study…

kyle yeah they are becoming an issue up here. The deer herd numbers are down significantly around here and the DNRs own research proves it. Hopefully by next year there will be a quota to harvest. We are well beyond what was called for as a sustainable level.

GWG8541 It has been found in the county I live in here in south-central KS. Going to be sending a sample in for testing before I process beyond quartering-out from now on…

Colorado has had CWD for over 30 years. No human has contracted it. If you cook your meat to 160* i would bet it to be safe.
-
twilliams I don’t like my deer cooked to 160F though lol. KDWP offers free testing. Its a minor inconvenience. I know it has never jumped into the human species. I worried less about it before having kids. Now that my boy has been eating solids and teething, I want to double check it.

@matt-westerhaus Talk about some shoe leather!

Wish I had the definitive answer to that. No one probably knows as of yet. I’ll just treat it as I do with the CWD. We’ve had CWD in Wi for some time. I’ve gone by the recommendation that as long as you’re not doing anything with the brain and spinal column you should be fine. The lymph nodes are removed during the butchering process.
I’ve never heard from anyone who has became sick from venison. And no, I don’t cook venison whole muscle to 160. I treat it the same as beef.
Just my two cents…
-
@matt-westerhaus I don’t do my venison to 160* either, but I am not concerned about CWD or coronavirus. I’m lucky if my red meat is cooked to 140* at the most. I was just referring to the folks that are concerned about those issues.

twilliams I would think that would be safe. My biggest concern is handling the dear and getting infected by the blood while dressing or butchering.

I do know one thing, I have no plans to stop hunting or eating venison anytime soon. If I see a deer wearing a mask, ill pass on it.
