I didn’t know feral hogs have made it that far north, the annoying gift that keeps on giving.

    That’s a big-un.
What part of Nebraska, and what is the approximate hanging weight?

Buddy of mine has been trying to kill off the feral hogs on his place in North central, NE

processhead Tell your buddy good freaking luck, all you can just about do is push them off for a period of time before they eventually return.

lkrfletcher That is one big pig, didn’t know they were in Nebraska. They need to allow open season and unlimited quantity or they will overrun your state.

I read an interesting article on the feral hog problem. One thing that I recall is game biologists discourage indiscriminate hunting of feral hogs because they are so smart that once they realize they are being hunted, they quickly become “educated” and very elusive and nocturnal.

gus4416 No, that one is, or was, a HOGZILLA. Not much good for roasting or whole meat cuts, but should be pretty good for lots of sausage. To bad he could not have been trapped, cut, & sweetened a bit first. They used to let em all run wild, then round em up with dogs, pen em, cut em, & sweeten em. That is probably why we have ferals now.

processhead I remember when we used to Goose & Duck hunt in Texas we had some. Half the time the only time I saw them was when I just had a shotgun with goose shot & they were too far away. By the time I could get my saddle gun I kept in the truck to get a shot at them, they were gone. Then we started baiting them & you would never see them again, except at night. Yes, they claim they are smarter than dogs.

They are illegal to sport hunt in Kansas for fear of hunters and hunting managers assisting their spread for sport

glen Wow, then if they are heavy in Nebraska, they will soon likely be as well in Kansas. Of course if the rules are right, spot or not, folks will hopefully keep them controlled.

I think Oklahoma already has them and has a season on them.

The same article I mentioned earlier said that a domestic hog released into the wild and allowed to reproduce will revert back to a feral hog in only a couple of generations. Feral characteristics meaning, shaggy coat, tusks, and lean/rangy body type.
