Have any of you guys from ND, SD, MN, WI, maybe IA that have German heritage ever heard of this or eaten it? It is very similar to goetta from what I am reading. I grew up eating this for breakfast at my Grandparents house. It was a common food among German immigrant farming families. It was traditionally made from the pig head meat but also a lot from pork butt. It is a cooked down mixture of ground pork meat with the fat, steel cut oats, spices, and my Grandma always put dark raisins in it (which was a northern Germany thing from what I have read). It is then fried in a bit of oil and topped with maple syrup or karo syrup. It is sooo good. I haven’t had it in 20 years but I am going to remedy that. My Dad got his Grandmother’s recipe from his great aunt!

ND Mike You are lucky you still had access to the recipe, it is something I am doing research on in my family, going through old recipe books from my parents and grandparents, also some Aunts.

bocephus yep for sure. I was also lucky that my aunt asked my Grandma to write some of her recipes down because she didn’t use any she cooked everything from memory! We then made a small cook book from it for our family. I should do that for my kids too because I hardly ever use a recipe for anything.

ND Mike I think it is important to keep family recipes going, I keep looking through my moms old cookbooks and hand written recipes and making a book of the ones I remember fondly .

ND Mike Good luck working through the recipes to get it to gaetta’s cousin. I know of only one city to purchase it and that’s Cincinnati. I have a pound of it in my freezer from my connection there. Have fun with the process.

ND Mike first of all, I’m hurt that you didn’t mention us Buckeyes. I have some in my freezer as I type. Its a staple with my wife’s family. They just call it grits, not to be confused with the wonderful concoction from the south.

ND Mike In fact, I’m going to get them out of the freezer and have a good breakfast this weekend. Thanks for bringing this up. It will be time to make another batch after this. It would be interesting to compare our recipes. Its pretty simple and straightforward.

GWG8541 that sounds like a plan. I’m actually pretty jealous that you have some. Post a pic to this thread after you fry some up!!!

ND Mike will do. My wife likes them thinned out and fried crispy. I like them anyway I can get them.

ND Mike Never heard of these. A camping friend started fixing goetta for us a couple years ago. I really like that. Hope it turns out.

It sounds good. Had not heard of that and there are a lot of German descendants around here.
