@dennyo A Police Officer and two Firefighters from a neighboring jurisdiction were struck by a car because of black ice 24 years ago on January 12 at about 6 am. It was definitely the worst black ice crash in my career. They had responded to an accident on I-675 caused by black ice. While they were attempting to render aid to victims of the first crash, a driver came through at “normal highway speed”, which was way too fast for the conditions and especially an emergency scene. The driver lost control and killed Officer Kalama instantly, FF O’Toole died after being medivaced by helicopter. FF Arnold was able to return to work after several months of rehab. I was on the Rifle Detail for Officer Kalahan’s funeral. It definitely left an impression about how dangerous that stuff is.
Fast forward to December 16, 2016 The same type situation and one of our officer was on I-75 responding to an accident. He wa[censored] and pinned between his cruiser and a car unable to stop. He lived because another of our officers got to him quick enough to get a tourniquet on his leg, but he lost his leg.
Highways with ice are one of the most dangerous places on earth you can be. Especially that black ice. Stay safe out there.
