Jerky vs Summer Sausage....?
-
Just read an article that was debating which is better, jerky or summer sausage? Got me wondering if people actually have a strong preference for one over the other. Also, I noticed a glaring oversight. Snack sticks were not even mentioned. As a commercial deer processor for many seasons, I see way more requests for summer sausage or snack sticks then jerky. Perhaps there is a reason for that beyond preference. Price? It’s easier to make jerky at home then sausage/sticks? Just wondering about people’s thoughts on the subject.

Deepwoodsbutcher I would guess you are right about jerky being easier to make at home. Also the number of spicing varieties is off the chart! .
At work and among friends jerky is shared and discussed more than snack sticks and much more than summer sausage
I As for myself there is no preference, they all have their time and place -
Deepwoodsbutcher I prefer jerky over snack sticks and summer sausage (mainly due to ingredients). If I were to have an animal processed by someone else I might order some sticks, but I’d be more likely to make jerky at home.

Sticks , Summer sausage, then distant third jerky. I am an old man and sticks and summer are easier on the jaws. AND you can be much more creative with sticks and summer
-
For me it boils down to how quickly I want to spend making it. Summer sausage I can stuff a lot quicker than snack sticks.
-
I make all of the above at home. My preference list…
- Whole Muscle Jerky
- Snack Sticks
- Summer Sausage
- Processed Jerky
-
Deepwoodsbutcher I like all of that if you want to share I accept

Same as what Ronald Dore said.
My sons and brothers are always looking through the freezer for whole muscle jerky and sticks first.
Departing Contestant. With my fake teeth, just have to slice that meat correctly. Restructured is great, but, find it a bit worky. May have to rethink this at some point. -

Deepwoodsbutcher I love them all. I think they all have a place at the table. Jerky certainly is the easiest to make. As far as my personal favorite, I think snack sticks are it.

Deepwoodsbutcher For me it depends on my situation. If I’m on the run I like jerky because I can grab it and chew as I go, but if I’m on here or watching tv (very seldom) I like the SS with cheese and crackers. I love them both for different reasons.

While everyone has preferences, I know I would get pretty tired of a steady diet of just one or two things. Variety is the spice of life.

Took another poll…

Boy that’s a tough decision. It really depends on where you are and what your doing.
