I thought I would share something stupid that my mom and I did tonight. She came out to my house to can some pumpkin, I was finishing up some sausage and cleaning. The pressure cooker was not sealing properly, so we let the little pressure out and took the lid off. The water in the bottom of the caner was gone, so without thinking, mom poured some hot tap water in. 7 of the 10 pint jars exploded causing burns on moms neck and I have burns on my face and arm. We had pumpkin and broken glass every where in our kitchen and dinning room. We are thankful we didn’t get hurt more than we did. My mom has canned for 50 years, and myself 25+ years, we know better than to do that, but didn’t have our mind on task, just trying to get too many things done at one time I guess. So I thought I would share this with you all just as a reminder to stay focused when doing some of the stuff we all do, that sometimes can be dangerous.

hey vegetarians, my food poops on your food!

kyle I’m glad she and you are both OK. Its easy to forget how dangerous some of the processes we use can be when you have done it for so long. Cherish the time you are spending with her. I miss my Mom every day, but especially when I’m canning and cooking.

kyle Kyle, I trust that when you said " burns on moms neck and I have burns on my face and arm" you are both in an easy mend, BUT, There are no burns that are easy!!! You I hope will mend without scars, your mom, Wholey Cow, That’s scary!!!

kyle Thanks for sharing your story. Hope you and your mom feel better soon. I will pass this story to my wife who does hot water bath canning and was thinking about starting pressure cooker canning.

kyle Glad things were no worse than they were and you and Mom are ok.
Yes, lots of these food processing tasks do have their risks. Stay mindful.

Wow. Thanks for sharing and I hope you and Mom heal well and fast. I would also highly recommend that you both do some canning together again very, very soon…gotta get back on the horse and not let a traumatizing experience like that seer in.

kyle Thanks for sharing this. Glad you’re both going to be OK. Not sure what kind of pressure cooker you have but I’ve found that if I stretch out the gasket before placing the lid on, I get a good deal. The gasket can shrink up over time in storage.

kyle Lessons relearned. Your story is what I enjoy about this site. People are not afraid to put out their stumbles in life. Happy that either one of you had to make the trip to the ER.

zbigjeff I wanted to share for 2 reasons. #1 to maybe help someone new to canning not make the same mistake, and #2 to show that even experienced people can make a mistake that could have been a lot worse all because of a lack of focus.
