Seasoning find in auction box
-
So I bought the contents of a shelf at a grocery store auction. Among the boxes of labels and stretch film I was intending to get, there was a little over a dozen of W1503 brat seasoning packets.
Should I be concerned with the best date, and when did they remove bha? Jonathon how can I decide the lot number on the ones on the right (bottom) to find the date?

I’m no expert no are am I a go to authority, BUT they seem to be fairly sealed up an I’d say “Give them a go!”
The seasoning cannot have lost that much of its punch, could it have?? I got to believe it will be wonderful!! -

Ridley Acres From my experience they might be a little clumpy or a lot and the spice strength could have waned, but overall, they will be fine. Individually the garlic and onion powders can get a little rancid, but a little fingertip taste can determine if it is worth using or throwing away. I do not worry about dates as much as the taste.

Only 1 way to find out.

Open it and give it the ol smell test!

Thanks guys, I’m fairly confident they should be fine, but I tossed them in the freezer until I can get some to them.

Another score I acquired was a large slicer but the motor is seized up. Sirman Galileo 350 I believe it is. It’s it worth getting 120v motors rebuild these days or do people just but replacement ones?
I’ll post a pic later this week when I get it back together.

Have you tried spinning the motor by hand? You should be able to back off the belt tensioner and try turning the motor by hand. If the slicer has been sitting for an extended period of time other things might be stuck and not letting the motor turnover. You could also remove the motor and check if it just needs to be cleaned. Other wise probably cheaper to just replace the motor.

Ridley Acres The W1503 says it is best by in 6/14 so it might have lost a significant amount of punch BUT it never goes bad really. As far as we are aware there is no decoding of batch #s to be able to get a date out of them on the W1500 Bratwurst but like Denny O said give-em a go. Maybe a smaller batch but the seasoning will still work, just won’t have the pop it would if it was fresh.
