I have had good luck using 800 then 1000 grit wet paper on a piece of glass.
Grinder issues (Weston Pro 22)
-
As stated before I am pretty new to sausage making. I purchased (used but like new) Weston pro 22 grinder. Worked great for a year but a few months ago I noticed over-heating at the base of the auger where it connects at the motor. Took it to get serviced and checked at Westons service center in NC and they said nothing wrong, even after testing it under load for 30 minutes. Get it back and first time using last night after 10 minutes of grinding it started heating again. Disassembled and used my temp gun and got a 167 degree reading at base of auger. Is this remotely normal? Is there anything that I could possibly be doing wrong? I know it is a loaded question but I am at a loss.

Possum You may need to replace or at least lube the bushing where the auger shaft seats into the drive motor.

Not sure about your Weston grinder but many grinders will have a fiber thrust bushing at the base of the auger so there is no metal to metal contact between the auger and the rear of the grinder housing.
This is what it looks like on my Hobart grinder. Like I said, your grinder might be different and I would think the Weston guys would have spotted this. -

My L*M has a 1/4" ish milk colored nylon type bushing that fits over the auger then it is inserted into the housing.

Possum According to the Weston web site, the Weston Pro 22 grinder has a thrust bearing that looks like the one circled in red. Make sure your’s is there and that it is not worn or damaged.

processhead Holy cow, this is the best reply Ive seen for weeks. When a guy is helpful, knows his subject, has awesome repair skills, can find the proper parts diagram, and knows how to draw notes on image and post picture…
Well, that there is Doctorate Level help! Like the 1 of 1000 posts you’re looking for that solves your broke car problem heh.
Well done, Sir! -

Same and on my 22 it is actually fixed in place on the grinder head. I will mention that before I learned to lube this area with white oil my auger would get hot at the base. Once I started lubing, it will finish 50lb and still be cold.

I lube the area with food safe lube where the red arrow is pointing when I grind and I no longer have issues with heating up.

processhead Absolutely love your answer and it seems I am missing this. Metal to metal contact would explain it for sure. I will look into ordering one and let y’all know if it fixes.

Pretty sure y’all figured out my issue. Just placed an order for a new auger bearing. Hopefully that will take care of it. Thanks again… especially processhead for going above and beyond

Possum He is a great resource for the community, very knowledgeable.

processhead Ordinarily I would have thought they would have spotted it as well but there is a possible reason they did not think of it. When I talked to them on the phone before bringing it they said I only needed to bring the main unit and no attachments so they did not have the auger. Still hoping this will be the fix but it surely seems like it could be the issue. Will know in a couple weeks

Hope this is the solution to the issue. Let us know how it goes after you get it back together and tested.

Possum If this does turn out to be the solution; order a second bushing in case you lose it or it gets damaged in cleaning. I always have a spare because I lost one, I assume it went down the sink drain while washing things up or rolled somewhere I can’t see. I never found it. I remembered Jon/Austin saying to always keep an extra auger bushing and an extra stuffer seal ring on hand. I now have spares of both on hand!
