Finally got a Tru-Hone
-
After a year+ of prowling the online auction sites and EBay, I finally found a used Tru-Hone. I spent about an hour today transforming my brother’s drawer of blunt pieces of steel back into actual knives.
Couple of things I’ve noticed. The unit is a beast. It’s larger than I expected, but I’ll find a spot for it. When knives are really dull, I have to keep at it on the 1st grind until the blade feels sharp the entire length. After that, two passes at each of the next levels makes an edge as good or better than from the factory. Third thing, when I have it running, friends and family suddenly show up with “hey, can you put an edge on this while you’re at it?”
Anyone else have any suggestions or tricks that I should know going forward? I’ve had it for two days, and this weekend, there won’t be a knife in my house doesn’t have a razor edge on it.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Never heard of them, but they look really nice. I wouldn’t have an excuse for a dull knife if I owned one of those.

My brother has a beautiful Damascus knife that I tried to sharpen a few months ago. I couldn’t get a good edge on it with old sharpener. I had sparks flying off today, but the knife is up to his standards, you could almost shave with it…

D Halverson They are a great tool, I have had one for a couple of years now. I always have to let my wife know when I sharpen her knives so she is prepared for how sharp they are after using it. I still use a steel after running the knives through the Tru Hone.

D Halverson Thanks for sharing your experience. I think you are one of a only a few people I know who owns one.
I have shopped around for a used one in the past, but don’t own one yet
They seem like a professional grade tool. Sounds like you are ready for a new occupation with your Tru-Hone.

D Halverson glad you could pick one up. I saw one over a year ago on Ebay and I was unable to be online at the end of bidding. It went fairly reasonable. I wish I could have been around during the final bid, but I’m sure the person who got it was glad I wasn’t.

D Halverson it’s always satisfying to get a fresh edge on the “money makers”, as us butcher call them. I’m sure your family members appreciate having you do that for them. A sharp knife is a safe knife.

processhead They show up on E-Bay occasionally for a good price, but you have to keep looking. I bought two a couple of years ago for about $350 a piece. Picked one of them up for a friend and he was very happy to get it, he processes his own steers and hogs. Had to buy new wheels for it, about another $50 dollars or so

GWG8541 On E-Bay you can make a top bid and it will automaticlly up your bid until it hits your max, doesn’t go right to what your max bid is, so you could get it for less than your max.

bocephus yeah I know, I hate doing it on higher priced items. I hate the bidding war of running it up. I like watching it and entering my top bid about a minute out. Someone got a deal on that one. If I remember right it went for about 450. What can I say, I’m cheap.

GWG8541 I understand, I usually wait until the last minute and then put in my max. bid.

Jonathon I always have to give my wife a warning after I sharpen the knives with my Tru Hone. I was impressed with it after I sent you the knives to be sharpened.
